Google announced new community investments in Virginia tied to its expanding data center footprint in Loudoun and Prince William counties, according to a Google blog post.
Electrical Apprenticeships
Google is funding the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA) to help train 2,741 new electrical apprentices by 2030, supporting local training facilities near its Virginia infrastructure. The company says this is part of Google.org's broader national goal of preparing more than 300,000 skilled tradespeople.
Grid Capacity
Google says it has worked with regional partners to add more than 500 megawatts of new energy capacity to the Virginia power grid to support its Reston office and data center operations.
Energy Impact Fund
Google is also launching a $15 million Energy Impact Fund aimed at offsetting local utility costs. According to the announcement, the fund will support:
- Apprentice Expansion: Funding etA to train an additional 2,741 electrical apprentices by 2030.
- Grid Capacity: Adding 500 megawatts of new energy capacity to regional power systems.
- Utility Relief: $15 million for home weatherization, critical repairs, and energy-efficiency upgrades for local residents.
The investments come as Google continues to expand its data center presence in Virginia, a region facing growing scrutiny over the strain large compute facilities place on local power grids and utility rates.
