Available inside Gemini in Chrome, the system allows users to execute saved prompts across single pages or multiple open tabs without retyping instructions. This update aims to streamline routine workflows like spec comparisons, document scanning, and custom data processing during daily browsing.
How Chrome Skills Work
Chrome's Skills feature turns repetitive AI prompts into one-click tools that run across multiple open tabs simultaneously. Instead of manually copying and re-entering prompts whenever you switch pages, you can now convert successful interactions directly from your Gemini chat history into a saved Skill.
To access your saved workflows, open Gemini in Chrome on desktop and either type a forward slash (/) or click the plus (+) icon. From there, selecting a Skill immediately executes the prompt against the content on your active webpage or a chosen selection of open tabs.
Pre-Built Library and Multi-Tab Execution
Alongside user-created prompts, Google introduced an integrated library of ready-to-use Skills designed for common online tasks. Users can add these pre-made prompts to their personal collection or customize the text to match specific needs. Key functionality includes:
- Prompt Saving and Editing: Convert chat history into permanent triggers and edit prompt logic at any time.
- Multi-Tab Execution: Analyze or cross-reference content across multiple selected browser tabs in a single action.
- Cross-Device Synchronization: Access and manage saved Skills across any desktop device where you sign into Chrome.
- Quick Management: Access settings and browse saved prompts by typing
/in Gemini and selecting the compass icon.
Early practical applications highlighted by Google include scanning lengthy online documents for specific facts, generating side-by-side product comparisons across separate retail tabs, and calculating nutritional metrics from online recipes.
Security Controls and Desktop Limitations
Because Skills can interact with sensitive web pages and external services, Google integrated the system with Chrome's existing safety architecture. Automated red-teaming and auto-update protections are active, and Gemini enforces explicit user confirmation prompts before executing critical actions, such as adding calendar events or dispatching emails.
An important caveat for users is platform availability: Skills are currently restricted to Chrome on desktop environments. Mobile users cannot execute or manage saved Skills, and workflows that attempt to interact with third-party web apps still require manual confirmation steps.
